Petis Udang is a thick, black, aromatic shrimp paste from Indonesia (especially East Java) and Malaysia, made by boiling down shrimp juice, sugar, and salt. Unlike dry shrimp paste (terasi), it is creamy, sweet and salty, and has an intense umami flavor. It is used as a seasoning for rujak, laksa, and dips.
